I love to read

I love to read.  In fact, if I don’t have a good book that is waiting for me at the end of my day, I feel a little lost.  I love snuggling in after the kids are fast asleep and reading a chapter or two. I guess it is my present to myself after a day filled with work, children, cooking and tidying.  So let’s dig in.

I love Brene Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection.  If you haven’t read or listened to Brene Brown, you are in for a treat.  She is an incredible researcher, teacher and speaker.  This particular book is slim and a quick read.  She calls it a “guide to a wholehearted life” and that is just what it is, a guide.  She talks about being enough, letting go of shame and blame, addictions, imperfections, authenticity, embracing joy, trusting, having faith and dancing.

I really can’t do it justice, but know that I have read and continue to read it over and over.  I have underlined and underlined again useful information and ideas.  I continue to refer to her research and calls to action throughout the book.  We all have limitations, addictions, worries, sorrows and fears that drive us down and make us quiet and small.  She helps shed light on all of that, she lends a hand out and helps the reader up.  She teaches compassion and courage.  She demands deep thinking and action.  She reminds us that we can live deep and abundant lives.

Here is an excerpt from her website

“This book is an invitation to join a wholehearted revolution. A small, quiet grassroots movement that starts with each of saying, “My story matters because I matter.” A movement where we can take to the streets with our messy, heartbreaking, grace-filled, and joyful lives. A movement fueled by freedom that comes when we stop pretending everything is OK when it isn’t. A call that rises up from our bellies when we find the courage to celebrate those intensely joyful moments even though we’ve convinced ourselves that savoring happiness is inviting disaster. Revolution might sound a little dramatic, but in this world, choosing authenticity and worthiness is an absolute act of resistance.”
